You're buying a laptop at an electronics store and the salesperson mentions the store has a 0% easy payment plan on purchases above a certain amount. You nod, hand over your credit card, and walk out feeling organised. Three weeks later the first statement arrives with a handling fee you didn't notice. 0% installment plans credit card promotions do spread the cost of a large purchase without charging interest "” but "zero percent" refers specifically to interest, not to the total cost of the plan.
What a 0% Installment Plan Actually Means
A zero percent easy payment plan (EPP) converts a credit card purchase into fixed monthly instalments at a 0% interest rate. Instead of paying the full amount in one billing cycle and potentially rolling it over at the card's standard interest rate, the amount is split across a set number of months "” three, six, twelve, or sometimes twenty-four "” and charged in equal portions.
The "zero percent" refers to interest only. Many plans carry a handling fee, also called a processing fee, that the bank or the merchant charges for setting up the arrangement. This fee is sometimes a flat amount and sometimes a percentage of the purchase value. It may be charged upfront as a lump sum or spread across the monthly instalments.
The merchant who offers the plan is usually absorbing some or all of the bank's fee in exchange for offering an attractive purchase option. That is why 0% installment plans credit card promotions are merchant-specific "” they depend on a commercial arrangement between the merchant and the bank.
How to Use a 0% Easy Payment Plan
The process looks simple, but the details at each step matter.
- Check the merchant is a participating partner. Not every retailer that accepts your card offers EPP. The bank publishes a list of partner merchants on its website. Offer Cabin's bank and card offers also lists active installment promotions with their eligible merchants.
- Confirm the minimum purchase amount. Most plans require a minimum spend to qualify "” often LKR 5,000 to LKR 25,000 depending on the bank and merchant. Purchases below that threshold aren't eligible.
- Ask about the handling fee before you commit. Request the full schedule of fees in writing. Some merchants waive the handling fee as part of a campaign; others pass it to the cardholder. The fee is part of your total cost.
- Choose the tenure that suits you. A longer tenure means smaller monthly payments but more months of your credit limit being occupied. A shorter tenure clears the balance faster and frees up the limit sooner.
- Confirm the conversion at the time of purchase. For in-store EPP, the merchant requests the conversion through the payment terminal. For online purchases, the EPP option usually appears at checkout or within the bank's mobile app after the transaction.
- Read what happens if you pay early. Some plans allow early settlement; others carry a penalty for paying off the balance before the tenure ends.
What the Handling Fee Actually Costs You
This is the part most shoppers skip "” and it's the most important number to check.
A handling fee of 1.5% on a LKR 60,000 purchase over 12 months works out to LKR 900. That sounds small. But on a shorter tenure "” say, 3 months "” some banks charge the same percentage, which means the effective annual cost of the handling fee is equivalent to a meaningful interest rate even though the plan is marketed as zero percent.
The handling fee structure varies by bank and by campaign. During promotional periods, banks sometimes waive the fee entirely to drive volume during festive seasons or sales events. These waivers are time-limited and merchant-specific. When the handling fee is zero and the interest rate is zero, the plan is cost-free "” a good option for managing a large purchase across months.
Common Mistakes With 0% Installment Plans
Assuming zero percent means zero cost. The handling fee is a cost. Calculate it as part of the purchase price before committing. If the handling fee makes the total cost higher than paying outright or using a different payment method, the plan may not be the right choice.
Forgetting that the full amount blocks your credit limit. When you set up a 12-month EPP on a LKR 50,000 purchase, the full LKR 50,000 is typically blocked against your credit limit from day one, even though you're only paying it off monthly. If your limit is tight, this can leave you without available credit for other purchases.
Missing a monthly payment. This is the most important risk. If you miss a payment on a 0% installment plan, most banks convert the remaining balance to the standard credit card interest rate "” which can be significantly higher than you were paying. The zero percent benefit is usually lost from the point of the missed payment, not just for that month.
Using EPP for a purchase you could pay outright. An installment plan makes sense for a large purchase you need to spread across months. Using it for a small purchase where you could pay the full amount immediately just occupies your credit limit without benefit.
Not checking if the plan covers online purchases. Some EPP arrangements are in-store only. If you're buying online, check whether the same bank-merchant EPP applies through the website's checkout or whether you need to call the bank to convert the transaction after purchase.
A Hypothetical Example: Two Tenure Options on the Same Purchase
This is a made-up example with fictional figures to illustrate how tenure choice affects the total cost "” not a real promotion or bank.
Say you purchase a hypothetical appliance costing LKR 48,000 on a credit card EPP. The plan offers 0% interest with a 1% handling fee on the purchase value, regardless of tenure.
The handling fee is LKR 480 either way. On a 3-month tenure, your monthly payment is (LKR 48,000 + LKR 480) ÷ 3 = LKR 16,160. On a 12-month tenure, it is LKR 48,480 ÷ 12 = LKR 4,040.
The total cost is identical. The difference is cash flow: the shorter tenure clears faster and frees your credit limit sooner; the longer tenure leaves more room in your monthly budget. If the bank were also charging a higher handling fee on longer tenures "” which some do "” the calculation would favour the shorter plan. Always get the fee schedule for each available tenure before choosing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do 0% installment plans credit card promotions actually work?
A 0% EPP splits a credit card purchase into fixed equal monthly payments at zero interest for a set tenure "” typically 3, 6, 12 or 24 months. The arrangement is between the bank and the merchant. Some plans carry a handling fee; others are fully waived during promotional periods. The zero percent refers to interest only "” always check for fees.
What is a credit card EPP Sri Lanka banks typically offer?
An Easy Payment Plan (EPP) is a bank's branded name for a 0% installment arrangement. The eligible merchants, minimum purchase amounts, available tenures and handling fees vary by bank and by campaign period. Checking the bank's own promotions page or the bank and card offers page on Offer Cabin shows which plans are currently live.
What happens if I miss a payment on an interest free installment plan?
Most banks cancel the zero percent arrangement and convert the remaining balance to the standard credit card interest rate. This rate is typically much higher than zero. The zero percent benefit is lost from the point of the missed payment on most plans, not just for that one month. Set up a standing instruction or direct debit to avoid missing a payment date.
Does the full purchase amount count against my credit limit on an EPP?
Usually yes. The full purchase value is typically blocked against your available credit limit from the day the EPP is set up. Your available credit is reduced by that amount, even though you're paying it off gradually. This matters if you need your credit limit for other purchases during the tenure period.
Can I settle a 0% installment plan early?
Some plans allow early settlement without penalty; others charge a fee for settling before the tenure ends. Check the early settlement terms before you commit to the plan. If you expect to pay off early, a plan with no early settlement penalty gives you more flexibility.
Are zero percent easy payment plans available for online purchases?
Some are, some aren't. In-store EPP is activated at the payment terminal at the time of purchase. Online EPP may appear as a checkout option on the merchant's website, or you may need to call your bank to convert the transaction to an installment plan after it has been processed. The bank's promotions page specifies whether the plan covers online transactions.
Check the Fee Before You Commit
A 0% installment plan credit card promotion is useful when the handling fee is waived or low and the tenure suits your cash flow. The risk is treating "zero percent" as meaning "free" "” the handling fee, the credit limit impact and the missed-payment risk are all real costs worth understanding before you sign up.
